A conversation with founder and visionary Ellen Gracyalny

Tucked away in the heart of downtown Providence, Ellie’s is a little slice of Paris with a Rhode Island soul. Whether you’re stopping in for a morning espresso and a flaky croissant or settling in for a leisurely lunch, Ellie’s transports you to a Parisian pâtissier with its impeccable pastries, warm hospitality, and a proven record of culinary excellence.

One Friday and Saturday nights, Ellie’s transforms into a chic wine bar from 6 to 10pm. Expect interesting reds, exciting whites, a variety of rosés, and of course, champagne, champagne, champagne.

Named after the famed elephant in “Water for Elephants” by author Sara Gruen, Ellie’s exudes charm from the moment you walk in from Westminster Street. The vibe is cozy and inviting, with soft lighting, rustic wooden accents, and a counter filled with beautiful pastries. The space is an Instagram dream, and even if you’re a regular, every visit feels special and personal. From the French music playing softly in the background to the aroma of buttery croissants baking, every detail is designed to make you feel like you’ve stepped into a Parisian café.

What truly sets Ellie’s apart is its commitment to French culinary tradition. Their menu features classic French pastries such as madeleines, éclairs, and macarons, as well as savory delights like croque monsieur and quiche Lorraine. Every item is made with meticulous attention to detail, using high-quality, locally sourced ingredients whenever possible. The bakery prides itself on traditional techniques, and each bite speaks to the  love used to craft each dish.
