Stop by the Providence Flea, Acushnet River Antiques or Brimfield Antique Flea Market. The Providence Flea returns to us on Sunday, June 3. The Flea is every Sunday until September 9. It features dozens of local artisans and revolving food trucks. We recommend the lavender lemonade from Presto Strang O Coffee Truck. Acushnet River Antiques in New Bedford, MA, is a treasure trove of local dealers. It’s a local staple, attracting bargain hunters and casual browsers. Rows and rows of antique treasures will stir up fond memories and lead you to your next great find. The Brimfield Antique Flea Market is for both serious and not-so-serious antique shoppers. Casual shoppers can stroll the fields of antique vendors, stopping when something catches their eye. More serious shoppers can map out their days using the Brimfield Flea Finder app. Either way, you’ll spend a fun day digging through treasures with mom. The 2018 dates for Massachusetts’ oldest flea market are May 8-13, July 10-15, and September 4-9.
Admire the Providence art scene
Gallery Night Providence is a free night of art and fun every third Thursday, March through November. 16 of Providence’s hottest “art spots” open their doors to visitors. This month’s Gallery Night Providence is Thursday, May 17. Guided bus tours leave about every 20 minutes starting at 5:30 pm. The last bus leaves at 7 pm. Each bus visits 4-5 galleries with the tour lasting for about 2 hours. The RISD Museum is a Providence staple. If mom appreciates art, she’ll love this museum! There are revolving exhibits and a special exhibit featuring the work of current RISD students.
Chow down at a food festival
As soon as the warm weather hits, Rhode Island fills up with food festivals. The Newport Oyster Festival is coming up May 18-20. For $25, enjoy locally harvested oysters, iconic champagnes, and waterfront bars. The Great Chowder Cook-Off is Saturday, June 2 at Fort Adams State Park in Newport. Local, national and international competitors join this annual cook-off. For $20 (before the event), you can enjoy endless chowder samples from some of the best chowder connoisseurs. Food Truck Fridays are every Friday, May-September at Roger Williams Carousel Village. Food Truck events are free to attend and some of Rhode Island’s best food trucks are in attendance. Stop and smell the flowers!
Rather than getting mom a bouquet, spend some time strolling and enjoying the spring flowers. The Bristol Garden Club is having its annual Mother’s Day Plant Sale at Blithewold on Saturday, May 12. From 8:30 am-1:30 pm, stop by to shop annuals, perennials, herbs, veggies, and handmade flower arrangements. Visit Wicked Tulips Flower Farm in Johnston for a very special experience.
