This may just be our favorite month out of the year. May is the perfect month to get outside, get eating, and get the summer party started! This month’s round-up is diverse and full of foodie fun. NewportFilm – Eating Animals

Thursday, May 3 at 6 pm
There is still time to buy your tickets for NewportFilm’s screening of Eating Animals. Don’t worry – no ones animals will be harmed at the screening! The film details the beginning of the end of factory farming. It tackles the seemingly simple question – where do our eggs, meat, and dairy come from? The film will be followed by a Q & A session with the film’s producer, Christopher Quinn.

Taco Fest PVD

Saturday, May 5 at 11 am – 6 pm
Celebrate Cinco de Mayo! Westminster Street in Downcity will be packed with food trucks, craft tables (including DIY flower crowns!), and a rock and roll yard sale. Come ready to chow down and party! There will be plenty of tacos from some of Rhode Island’s best food trucks and restaurants. Don’t miss out on macaron ice cream sandwiches from Ellie’s Bakery’s macaroon cart. Pair up your taco with Friskie Fries or some Durk’s BBQ. After your belly is full, stroll over to the Providence Rock and Roll Yard Sale to find your new favorite piece. There will be curated records, books, vintage items, handmade jewelry, and more. Grab a beer from the Malted Barley, perfect for sipping and strolling. It’s a super celebration and fun for the whole family. It’s kid and dog-friendly, so bring the kiddos along!

Farm-to-Farm Bike Ride
Portsmouth, Rhode Island
Saturday, May 5 from 2 pm – 4 pm
Join Bike Newport on Saturday to enjoy the family farms on Lovely Middle Road in Portsmouth. The four-mile ride is great for families and riders of all abilities. Walkers and runners are also welcome. Lovely Middle Road will be car-free so that riders can enjoy the views and ride together. Rhode Race – Providence

There is still time to register for Rhode Races’ Providence race! The downcity race includes a marathon, half marathon, 5K, and kids’ fun run. If running isn’t your thing, head over to the park and cheer on the runners!
The race starts in Downcity Providence and travels the East Bay Bike path, urban and rural neighborhoods.

Volvo Ocean Race – Newport

The 2018 Volvo Ocean Race is sailing into Newport this month. Newport is the race’s only North American stopover – how cool is that!? The Volvo Ocean Race is often described as the longest and toughest professional sporting event in the world. It takes sailing teams across 45,000 nautical miles around the world, across four oceans, six continents, and 12 host cities. Victorian Game Night

Take a step back into the past at Lippitt House Museum! Learn the rules and tricks of the Victorian-era’s most popular board games. You’ll learn how to play Whist, a favorite of Mary-Ann Lippitt. Global Eats: An International Culinary Celebration

Dorcas International Institute of RI is celebrating 100 years of nonprofit work and Rhode Island’s diverse foodie community. Proceeds will go directly to Dorcas International, which is Rhode Island’s largest agency working with immigrants and refugees in our state. Global Eats is the combination of their nonprofit work and love of food. Over the years, Dorcas has collected dozens of recipes from their clients. For this event, they invited local chefs to re-imagine those recipes to share with RI’s foodie community. We can’t wait to see what some of our favorite chefs serve up!

2018 RI Fiber Festival and Craft Fair
Coggeshall Farm Museum
Saturday, May 19 at 10 am – 4 pm
Coggeshall Farm is an RI-staple. It’s a living history museum portraying the lives of farmers in the late 1700s. During the Fiber Festival, interpreters are dressed in costume and intermingle with guests. Explore the historic farmhouse and gorgeous, coastal grounds. Bring the kiddos for old-fashioned games, kids’ crafts, dance performances, acoustic music, and more. Handcrafted items and natural fibers will be available for purchase. A master sheep shearer will be getting the farm’s sheep ready for the warm weather.
It’s a fun way to experience something new and get into the springtime spirit!
Admission is $7/adults and $5/kids. Tickets are available the day of the event.

Newport Oyster Festival

Newport is the center of seafood-ie events. Newport Oyster Festival is no exception. This year’s event is a two-day celebration of Rhode Island oysters and the people who love them. The champagne and oysters will be chilling on ice both nights. Take your time savoring oysters from 12 of Rhode Island’s best growers and soak in the seaside views. In addition, the event benefits oyster shell recycling and composting efforts. Tickets are $25 per day and can be purchased here.

The Art of DIY Florals

Little State Flower Co. will lead this hands-on workshop. Learn how to create budget-friendly centerpieces using local flowers and foliage buckets. Enjoy cocktails and small bites from Newport Vineyards while you create your masterpiece. You will take a home your very own unique, 100% local floral arrangement! This event is great for anyone tackling their wedding or event flowers. It’s also great to just learn and enjoy time spent with friends. Tickets are $90 and can be purchased here. Mushroom Hike

Expert mushroom hunters will impart their wisdom during this month’s Mushroom Hike in Ballard Park. Ballard Park is home to a large number of maple trees, which mushrooms are attracted to. Hike the trails, learn foraging secrets, and about the unique role fungi play in the ecosystem. It’s a great way to get the family outside and learning about nature.
